Applying Positive Behavioral Supports and Interventions to Address Student and Classroom Management Needs


PBIS is a well used and successful program aimed at helping students be behaviorally successful in their school. While a teacher's classroom is their personal domain to manage, schools have found is successful to implement a set of rules for the broader school community. This ensures that students understand the rules for the cafeteria, specials rooms, the hallways, and the classroom at all times. Clear and precise expectations are outlined and the consequences of not meeting expectations are effectively communicated. Consistency in implementing these rules throughout the school is essential to ensuring student success. 

I appreciated thinking how important consistency, clear expectations, and a secure classroom environment are in helping students focus on their academic achievements. Students respond well to boundaries, realizing that the limitations imposed on them also effectively limit the amount of time they need to spend on circumnavigating those limitations. If boundaries are confused and expectations muddy, students will spend all their time focusing on what they can get away with and how far they can push the teacher before he or she will "snap." 

One thing that impressed me about PBIS is how it can help all students. For students with rigid views, such as some students with ASD, the consistency of PBIS is a welcome relief to changeable rules. For students who are easily distracted, a well implemented PBIS framework can limit distractions. For students with disabilities, PBIS can potentially reduce bullying.
